Media Literacy

  • The Midwest Center for Media has a variety of Media Literacy programs that engage students and teach them how to understand the complex media world they live in. We specialize in working with low-income, disadvantaged youth in both urban and rural settings.

Arts Technology in Transit

  • This is a mobile media production lab that brings a multi media production studio to your location.

BackTalk

  • BackTalk is a program funded by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and provides resources throughout the entire state of Missouri. The Midwest Center for Media Literacy has worked with high schools throughout the state in an effort to team up with students and teachers to use media as a voice against the tobacco industry. See what the students are doing!

Everyday Heroes

  • This project challenges students to compare and contrast TV Heroes to the everyday people who make the world a better place to live. They produce short documentaries about their selected “real hero.”

Media and Health

  • We have designed programs that help students see the connections between the media and health. From body image to childhood obesity to drug use, violence and respect for others, the media exerts enormous influence. We teach students to think critically so that they make decisions independently.

Pentimento

  • The Pentimento project was designed to allow students the opportunity to tell the real-life stories of their community. The students of Wellston, Missouri interviewed and shot footage of many different stories in their city in an effort to bring awareness to the community about the events that were happening everyday around them. Check out the stories from the high school students who took part in this project!

Project Citizen

  • This is a federally funded program that teaches students the importance of becoming active citizens. We have added the importance of media literacy in understanding the political and policy environment, and we also help kids create a marketing campaign to influence public policy.

Social Marketing

  • Students learn how to identify community issues and develop social marketing campaigns to raise awareness, gain support, and lobby for positive change. Using new media like YouTube, MySpace, and Facebook, along with traditional media outlets, children are able to design messages that are seen by their peers and decision makers.
